Tax Pledge Campaign 2005
The Tax Pledge Campaign 2005 has a number of problems with it.
If you have read my tax page you will know the Green Party has a very different starting point for tax.
Taxes will work differently under Greens. They will be fairer across society and they will be more transparent.
Taxation can be a way in which we all contribute to making the world around us a better place for everyone, rather than simply pursuing our own self-interests.
The planet is already in a state of emergency. 30,000 people die every day as a result of extreme poverty and deprivation. Pollution and resource depletion are creating serious environmental problems, both here and overseas, and storing up others for the future. "Climate change
is a bigger threat to the world than terrorism." (Sir David King)
True, not all uses of tax are beneficial, and there will always be a certain amount of waste and inefficiency.
But to rule out any increases in taxation as a point of principle, when there is clearly so much that needs to be done and perhaps so little time left to do it, would appear to me to be irresponsible.
