You DO have a choice!     Martin Deane

Greens vote Grey at Age Concern, Hull

"This is a flagship national resource in Hull! Everything from massage to benefits advice - I urge all the elderly to drop in and see what they provide."  - Martin J Deane

The Age Concern centre, Porter Street, is the only Healthy Living centre that Age Concern runs in Britain. It is a first and one of which the city of Hull can rightly be proud.

Campaigned for by elderly people across Hull, the Healthy Living centre handles up to 2000 referrals a year from elderly people living across the city.

Among the services run by Ann Smith, West and Central Community Manager-- pictured here with Martin Deane-- is their Breast Screening Department.

Breast Screening stops once a woman reaches the age of 65, "...but she still has a 2/3 chance of having breast cancer diagnosed," says Ann Smith, "Where else will they get breast screening now, if not a centre like this?

Early diagnosis means more effective treatment. Our Department saves lives."

While at the Centre, Martin Deane, Green Party candidate for Hull North presented Ann Smith with the Green Party response to Age Concern Manifesto--20 Million Votes.

The Green Party campaign includes  -

  • Raising the single pension to £109 per week;  £167 pension for a couple;
  • restoring pensions' link to earnings;
  • free residential care for the elderly where necessary;
  • A commitment to high standards of care and local services in each locality;
  • Working for needed significant improvements in mental healthcare for the elderly.
